On October24th,2011, different language editions of Steve Jobs were finally released into the book market worldwide simultaneously. According to the head of the translation of the Chinese edition, the Chinese translation was done in a new model called "crowdsourcing translation", namely, to recruit and select several appropriate translators to do the translation of the book cooperatively through the Internet. Voices of questioning the translation quality have kept arising, and "crowdsourcing translation" thus came into the vision of the public. Actually, Steve Jobs is not the first book translated through crowdsourcing. As early as in2008, Dongxi.net got Out of Control: The New Biology of Machines, Social Systems, and the Economic World translated in this way, the Chinese edition of which was published by Xinxing Press in December,2012and was well-received. By March25,2013, the number of books that had been translated through crowdsourcing and presented on Yeeyan.org as "Already Published" increased to34, and workers of Yeeyan.org were recruiting translators for another36books.What is the crowdsourcing translation model like? How is its translation quality? These questions merit our attention. However, it is regretful that little attention from domestic academic circle has been paid to this topic. Besides, translation studies have long been focused on the translation of "classics"; the number of studied on the translation of bestsellers such as Steve Jobs is very limited. Only several MA theses are found to deal with bestseller translation, but they are text-oriented and pay little attention to the translation process of bestsellers.In view of this, this thesis aims to explore the crowdsourcing translation model of bestsellers from the perspective of Skopostheorie. The thesis firstly gives a full account of the crowdsourcing translation model of bestsellers and then justifies its existence through theoretical analysis. Then with the translation of Steve Jobs as a case study and Skopostheorie as its theoretical basis, the author demonstrates how the Skopos of different roles involved in translation practice influenced the translation process of Steve Jobs. Furthermore, by analyzing the problems in the translation of Steve Jobs, the author attempts to put forward some suggestions for the improvement of the crowdsourcing translation model of bestsellers. The study is supposed to have some pioneering significance for the theoretical study of crowdsourcing translation model, as well as some practical significance for the improvement of bestseller translation and its crowdsourcing translation model.
