Man and animals not only depend on each other mutually but also restrict eachother mutually. Animals promote the development and civilization of human society. The interaction between man and animals is as long as the beginning of human’shistory. Judging from the archaeological discovery of Neandertal arts, the animal isone of the most important subjects in ancient art creation. Whether in literature worksor traditional customs, the attention paid to animals leaves clear development tracks, especially in literatures. In recent years, China has introduced and translated a lot ofexcellent animal fiction works from abroad. These works broaden our horizon, enrichour knowledge and strengthen the communication. Of course, many of them arewell-received at home. However, there are still some excellent animal fiction workswaiting for us to explore, for example the famous American writer of children’sliterature, Jim Kjelgaard, who wrote forty-six books, before he died in1959at the ageof forty-eight. Nearly all his books are for teenagers and about animals, and they areall well written, clear, and suspenseful, but it is Big Red that is Kjelgaard’s primaryliterary legacy. This paper applies textual analysis and the original material research methods toexplore the artistic charm of Jim Kjelgaard’s animal fiction work Big Red. The body ofthe paper includes three parts. Chapter One analyzes the reason why Jim Kjelgaardchooses animal fiction as his own branch of artistic expression, namely, his particularlife experience and the appeal of mysterious mammals in the woods. As literatureworks are the reflections of reality, the description of various vivid animals’ imagesexpresses the author’s observation, realization and ideas about life. There are four mainartistic features of animal fiction: shaping various animal images, showing the amazinganimal nature, portraying the magic natural scenery and the pursuit of solemn andstirring plot, which embody the charming of animal fiction perfectly. Chapter Twoanalyzes Big Red from the thematic perspective of love. It is love that fills the novel. The love between Danny and Red makes them fearless when faced with dangers, fighting bravely and fiercely in the wildness; the love between Danny and his fathermakes them consider for each other at any time, which is so touching that it moves usto tears; the love between Mr. Haggin and the Picketts makes them trust each other. Therefore, Mr. Haggin asks Danny to look after Red, and then there is the story of BigRed. Chapter Three will analyze the artistic characters of Big Red combining thedescription of environment and plot. Animal fiction works reflect the characters ofecological aesthetics almost perfectly. This chapter will explore the ever-lasting charmof animal fiction from the perspective of ecological aesthetics. Animal fiction embodiesthe notion that different species should support each other and live harmoniously.Harmony is one of the most important features of ecological aesthetics. There aredifferent organisms living in different places on earth. They compete to survive, but thecompetition is based on, to some degree, cooperation, which will reach balance bycompetition. This kind competition will not lead to the extinction of species but thediversity and prosperity of species. It is the cooperation of the different species and thecoordination of the environment that create the harmonious beauty of the world. Thenthere comes the conclusion of the paper. Through the discussion of Jim Kjelgaard’sanimal fiction, this paper reveals the unique charm of Big Red, provides an angle forreaders to understand this animal fiction, and partly explains the reason why animalfiction is so popular in contemporary children’s literature.
