This is a report on the translation of Western Learning in the Late Qing Dynasty. The original history book is written in Chinese, and the author tries to firstly translate the introduction of it into English. The final translated version will provide a reference for other translators, and offer more materials to English readers interested in this period of history. The report includes4chapters:the introduction of the translation project, the analysis of the source text, the translation theories and methods, and the conclusion. The source text can be translated according to the functional theories. Chapter3is the most important part, which illustrates mainly sued translation methods with examples in the translation of words, sentences, and discourse. In particular, for word translation, methods of supplementary, omission, adoption, adaptation, transliteration and paraphrase are adopted; for long Chinese sentences, sentence breaking is needed; for textual-cohesion, repetition in Chinese should be rendered by omission or pronouns of English.Besides illustrating translation theories and methods, the report also gives examples of translation of book titles, institutions, places involved in the history of Western Learning.
