A Translation Project Report On Chapter Seven Of Breastfeeding And Human Lactation (Except)

With China’s rising economy and its people’s growing life standards, our awareness of health care is catching up with that of the developed countries. A few years ago the concept of breastfeeding care was alien to us, but now it’s a common service employed by many new parents all over the country. The personnel practicing in this trade, the International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) is now offering professional helps to parents to ensure a healthy growth for both mothers and babies.This paper is a translation project report. Its source text, Breastfeeding and Human Lactation (fourth edition) is none other but a teaching material for IBCLCs, edited by Professor Jan Riordan of School of Nursing, Wichita State University and Doctor Karen Wambach from School of Nursing, University of Kansas. The translation project focuses on the selected part of the seventh chapter of the book.The source of the report belongs to medical text; it is both a text of scientific writing traits as well as humanistic ones, for the book is dedicated to professional workers of the noble mission to help mothers and babies and their families. In such context the translation work of this book requires both universal standards for scientific translation and a certain degree of readability. In the light that the book was compiled in regard to American realities, its translation also calls for consideration of the counterpart situations in China. The report aims to provide consult for the later translation work of this type of books, by analyzing the original text and its linguistic characters and summarizing the writer’s translation process with translation theories.The paper describes the pre-translation preparations, in-translation process and post-translation of the whole task. The preparations include familiarization with the source text, its linguistic traits and translation requirements, and the building of the terminology database. For the in-translation process, the paper elaborates on the analysis of the text, the pre-processing of the files necessary for the translation work to begin, and the individual work and cooperation done by the author and my co-workers. The post-translation works are about the layout adjustment and the proofreading of the work. The vital part of this paper, though, is the case analysis of the translation, which will elaborate from the lexical level and the syntactic level, and ultimately result in a summarization of the translation methods of this book.
