A Report Of Simultaneous Interpretation Of A Speech On The6th High-level Forum On Economic And Trade Cooperation Of Northeast Asia

This paper is on the basis of participation in the6th High-Level Forum onEconomic and Trade Cooperation of Northeast Asia, which was held on September6,2012. The author chooses the speech by Deputy Director of the National Developmentand Reform Commission Liu Xiaobin, as the object of study of this report onsimultaneous interpretation.This paper focuses on the detailed work of translation preparation and itsimportance, reviews the problems encountered during simultaneous interpretation fromChinese to English, and finds solutions after analysis. After many years of study andconsulting data, the author finds out that there are adequate books and informationabout translation theory and specific cases, but limited information about combinationof theory and practice. There are few records of detailed simultaneous interpretationworkflow and analysis. The author has recorded her simultaneous interpretation practicein this paper. Hopefully, it can be taken as reference material for ConferenceInterpretation, and contributes to the study of improving simultaneous interpretation.The first chapter made a detailed instruction of the background knowledge of theforum and the characters of the text is described. In the second chapter, combining thechapter of case study, the author reviews the work of preparation before interpretation,points out which work plays an active role in the progress of simultaneous interpretation,and summarizes the part that needs to be improved in the work of preparation. In thechapter of case study, four kinds of specific problems encounter in SI are described:How to translate words and expressions with Chinese character; How to deal with thedifferences between sentence structure in Chinese and English; What to do if translatorcan’t follow the spokesman or, if there is mistranslation or omission. After analyzing thereason of different problems, the author concludes that syntactic linearity, forecasting,restructuring and adjustment are four best translation strategies to deal with theproblems described above. Review and summary of the SI mission come intoConclusions as follows: First, It is very important to do sufficient preparation work.Second, which translation strategies should be choosing? Third, Interpreter should have three basic skills.
