Translation Of Chinese Corporate Profile From The Perspective Of Text Typology Theory

As an important part of corporate promotional material, the company profile is a window for an enterprise to display and publicize itself. Therefore, the Chinese corporate profile translation plays a more and more important role in establishing enterprise image and enhancing international competitiveness. Presently, however, the Chinese corporate profile translations vary greatly in quality, marred with various problems. Sometimes the Chinese corporate profile translations are literal and rigid, which leads to the puzzle and misunderstanding of foreign readers and the invalidity of the publicity. This phenomenon deserves our attention.Text typology theory is based on functional translation theory. The main idea of text typology theory is that different text types have different characteristics and functions, and the specific function of the source text is a decisive factor in choosing suitable translation strategies. In this thesis, based on Reiss’s and Newmark’s theories of text typology, we have divided the texts of Chinese corporate profile into three types: informative, expressive and vocative ones. From this perspective, we have examined the problems in translating Chinese corporate profile and probed into the suitable translation strategies for different text types. During the translation process, the translator should decide the text type first before selecting from the translation methods such as semantic translation, communicative translation, amplification and omission, recast, replacement, etc. Through the analysis of concrete examples, we hope the thesis can help improve the quality of the Chinese corporate profile translations.
