Corporate profile is an important channel for clients to have a basicunderstanding of the company. Currently, an increasing number of Chinese companiesgo abroad and set up business relations with foreign companies. Thus, the quality ofEnglish corporate profiles is crucial to a company’s image and a corporate profilewith high quality is likely to attract further foreign partners. Although manycompanies have both Chinese and English corporate profiles on their websites, theEnglish version is less than satisfactory, such as word-for-word translation, whichlacks consideration on textual level.Domestic study on the translation of corporate profiles focuses on the words andexpressions. The translation strategies are also limited, so further study is needed.Based on Katharina Reiss’s text typology, this thesis analyzes the function ofcorporate profiles on the textual level and then proposes translation strategies guidedby the leading function of the corporate profile.Taking corporate profiles from the websites of China’s top500enterprises asexamples, the author compares the text characteristics with corporate profiles selectedfrom Amerian companies. Then the author points out problems of text content andtext function in Chinese companies’ English profiles. One main reason is that theinformative function of the text is not fully achieved while the operative function isneglected. By applying Reiss’s text typology theory to the translation of the corporateprofile of Mengniu Group, the thesis analyzes the translation process and arrives atthe following conclusions: based on the type and functions of the source text, thetranslator should correctly choose information and organize the text stucture toproduce function-oriented translations;“adaptation” strategy is applicable to thetranslation of corporate profiles; during the adaptation process, the translation ofsource text should conform to the norms and conventions of the target language andculture.
