Kaifeng has a history of more than two thousand years. Its long history has left it richtourism resources. As one of the twenty-four famous historical and cultural cities of China,Kaifeng has been drawing more and more attention of foreign visitors. Scenic-spotintroduction is the first step for overseas visitors to know about the scenic spot. But in mostcases, overseas visitors know nothing or little about Chinese. So the translation of scenic-spotintroductions plays an important role in the process of promoting the city. However, there aremany errors and awkward expressions in the translations available now. It is necessary toconduct relative studies on the topic to for the better development of Kaifeng’s tourismindustry. This thesis researches the C-E translation of Kaifeng scenic-spot introductions in theframework of Skopostheorie. Regarding translation as a purposeful activity, Skopostheorieemphasizes that the shape of the target text and the translation strategies are determined by theintended purpose of the target text and broadens the vision of translation study.Through the analysis of translation errors existing in the English version of Kaifengscenic-spot introductions, the author finds that the causes behind the errors are mainlytranslators’ inadequate awareness of translation purposes, their ignorance of the text functionsand inadequate cross-cultural awareness.In order to realize the purpose of the translation of Kaifeng scenic-spot introductions, thethesis reveals that this type of translation should be reader-oriented. Accordingly, the authorproposes several translation strategies for the translation, including addition, omission,adaptation and literal translation with the hope to improve the quality of C-E translation ofKaifeng scenic-spot introductions and promote Kaifeng’s tourism industry.
