A Study Of The English Translation Of Four-Character Expressions In Chinese Scenic Spot Introductions

This thesis attempts to study the principles and methods for the English translation of four-character expressions in Chinese scenic spot introductions as exemplified by scenic spots in Hunan province.As linguistic units consisting of four Chinese morphemes, four-character expressions fall into two categories, namely, the fixed and unfixed; and they are widely used in Chinese scenic spot introductions. With concise structures and rich cultural roots, they can express complex and profound meanings with fewer words and add charm to Chinese scenic spot introductions.The principles of faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance should be followed in the English translation of four-character expressions in Chinese scenic spot introductions to ensure that the content of the original is faithfully reproduced, and the translation is smooth and flowing in expressions and elegant in style. The method of literal translation should be used when it is possible so as to achieve the unity in context and form between the original and the translation. The method of liberal translation can be used in rendering expressions with special cultural connotations so that the readers can have a better understanding of the information contained in the original. We can use both methods in cases where the original contains elements that can be translated literally as well as special cultural connotations which can only be reproduced through liberal translation. As to expressions which are not in conformity with the thinking, linguistic and expressing pattern of the English language, they can be deleted to simplify the text.
