The origin of the translation is the book The History of Cuba, which is written byWillis Fletcher Johnson, published in America. Johnson was an honorary professor ofdiplomatic history in New York University. The author of this thesis translates thePreface, Chapter1, Chapter3-4and Chapter33. There are over10000words in all.The nature, culture, business and economy of Cuba have been recorded in detailsin this book. The author would like to translate some chapters in this book, hoping totell people what Cuba is really like. At the same time, the translation can be a choicefor those who want to learn about the history of Cuba and America and those who areinterested in cross-culture.This thesis is composed of two parts—translation practice and report on thepractice. The practice refers to that the author translates the selected chapters intoChinese altogether about ten thousand words. The translation report constitutes fiveparts, including the translation introduction, translation preparation, translation andcase study, translation experience, and the conclusion.By doing this translation, the author learns that translation is not that easy to do.At the same time, the author has learned that to be a competent and qualifiedtranslator, one has to make adequate preparations and possess several qualities.During the process to be a competent translator, the author still has a long way to go.There are still much to be improved in translation. After finishing the translation, theauthor gain some experience in doing better translation: firstly, translators should readmore books in order to have a wide range of knowledge; secondly, translators shouldunderstand the original text thoroughly; thirdly, translators should find equivalentlanguages to present a correct and clear translation for readers.
