Interpreting is an extremely complicated activity rather than an activity of wordto word corresponding translation. The essence of interpreting is to correctly deliverthe concept and intention of the source language in target language. During theprocess of interpreting, the impact of intercultural elements can not be ignored. It iswell known that certain culture can not be understood in a short time, so some copingstrategies of intercultural communication will be able to solve some problems causedby intercultural elements during the interpreting. This paper tries to analyze theimpact of intercultural elements on the quality of interpreting and put forward somecoping strategies by analyzing certain cases.During the process of learning interpreting, most of the problems the interpretinglearners came across lie in the lack of vocabulary and the listening comprehension. Those problems could be overcome through a certain period of training. However, after the interpreting learners overcome the difficulties, it is an interestingphenomenon that even for the interpreters who master both the source language andthe target language very well, it is still a great possibility for them to fail to accuratelydeliver the concept and the intention of the source language in target language. Thereare even some very classic jokes on this point. This phenomenon is so interesting thatit is worth studying the reason of its existence and trying to find out the copingstrategies to solve the problem. In this way, it will not only help interpreting learnersovercome those difficulties, but also make them realize the complex and difficulty ofinterpreting, so that to improve interpreters’ capacity and the accuracy of theinterpreting by way of conscious cultural accumulation and interculturalcommunication. This paper includes three parts to discuss the impact of intercultural elements onthe quality of interpreting and the coping strategies.
