This thesis is a report on translating The Fault in our stars by John Green, whichgives a detailed description of the whole process and analyzes some examples takenfrom the book and present the relevant translation methods.The novel The Fault in Our Stars was one of the brilliant works of the writer ofbestseller books for teenagers, John Green. It tells a great and sad story about twoteenagers who got cancer met with each other in a cancer support group, and how theywere acquainted with each other and how they know and love each other then. Andthere are also many different view on live, death and love. The clues of the novel isclear, the story line is full of ups and downs, the characters are described vividly, thepsychological description is delicate, and the central idea is outstanding. The writer hasthe experiences of getting along with those children who got incurable diseases, andlater he created The Fault in Our Stars. It have a profound effect on western teenagerliterature, and play an important role in teenagers’ growth. On the other hand, it alsohas literature research value and artistic appreciation value, so it is very worthy oftranslating.The Translation Report has five parts. The first part is the introduction, includingthe features of literature translation and the main differences between literaturetranslation and non-literature translation. And the literature value and social value ofthis translation. The second part is mainly about the translation task, including thenature of the task, the source and the requirements of the task, the main contents of thesource text, the brief introduction to the writer and analysis of the source text. The thirdpart elaborates each steps of the translation process ranging from preparations fortranslation to revision of the retranslation. Then some work after finishing translating.The major part of the thesis is the fourth part, which is mainly about the case analysis.And there are also many related studies about translation theories before theseexamples. The cases are analyzed respectively in such categories as modifiers, rhetorics,dialogues, polysemy, long difficult sentences and assimilation. The last part is the conclusion. By doing this translation work, the writer learns that translation is a hardwork. In order to do the translation well, the translator needs to possess many kinds ofqualities: solid foundation in both English and Chinese, encyclopedic knowledge, theability to use dictionaries and network media efficiently, rigorous and precise workingattitude and a strong sense of responsibility.This translation task makes up an important part of my study for master’s degree,and prepares me for my future career as a translator. I benefited a lot from thisexperience which not only enhanced my translation skills as a translator, but alsoimproved my professional skills as a team leader.
