As the development of economic and technology, China has more frequentcross-culture communication with other countries in the world. The requirements offoreign culture also enlarge. The foreign culture unconsciously influenced Chinesepeople’s concept. Therefore, the translation of foreign novel has a practical meaning forthe import of foreign culture and spread.The thesis analyzes the translation based on translation practice. The author chooseto translate the Gap Year (chapter1~3), which is the latest novel of Sarah Bird. SarahBird is a famous American novelist, playwright and reporter.The first chapter mainly introduces the content of translation practice, thebackground information of the writer,task analysis and guiding translation theory. Thesecond chapter is the description of the translation procedure including reading,expressing and proof. The third chapter illustrates and analyzes practical cases from twoaspects of language and culture. The forth chapter is the qualities that a translator shouldbe acquired. Finally, it comes to the conclusion of some suggestions.Through the translation practice, the author experiences the hardship of translation.Translation is an art of language, which needs translator to express the language meaningas well as culture connotation. It is hard to be perfect. A translator should keep learningto improve language level and cultural accomplishment.
