In his article The Indianization of China:A Case Study in Cultural Borrowing, Hu Shi describes and analyzes the process of China’s indianization. The present report focuses on the problems encountered in translating cultural items in the article and attempts to come up with solutions.Firstly, the report describes the translation task and specifies its requirements, goal and process. In the case study, the report demonstrates the ways to translate the common cultural items used by Hu Shi in his English works, those items which can be classified into two types:quotations and terminology. In the end, by examining Hu Shi’s works in Chinese, the report reveals his linguistic features and suggests that translators of The Indianization of China should imitate his way of writing. |
