The Application Of Quantitative Evaluation Of Faithfulness In Conference Interpreting

With the acceleration of the process of globalization, communication among nations has become more and more frequent, and people have become more and more dependent upon interpreting, which in turn, calls for high quality of the latter, and in particular, that of conference interpreting. In recent years, some scholars have begun to do research on the evaluation of the quality of interpreting. However, up to now, a satisfactory method has not yet appeared. This may be due to the fact that the study of interpreting is only starting, and studies of conference interpreting largely draw on the strength of translation or are not systematic enough. Hence, there is an urgent need to establish a system for the evaluation of interpreting quality.In her book Evaluation of Interpreting, Cai (2007) discusses four parameters for evaluating conference interpreting, including faithfulness, accuracy, fluency and efficiency of strategy application, and faithfulness includes three information levels. Nevertheless, the analysis of faithfulness in the book mentioned is largely semantic, taking little account of pragmatic contexts. This thesis attempts to put forward a broader concept of faithfulness evaluation, analyze other factors which may also affect interpreting. Furthermore, this thesis tries to apply this new systematic method to a specific example, and compare the differences between the results of two analytical methods.In this thesis, the author tries to apply the improved method to an example and provide a quantitative analysis. The results show the feasibility of this improved method. In the last chapter, the author points out some of the innovations and deficiencies of this thesis.
