The international communication of domestic sports news is a significant step to integrate the vision of world sports power into "going global" strategy.Currently,China's domestic sports news still remains at a low degree of international coverage and there exist only a few domestic English websites of sports news, which don't involve many domestic sports incidents but mostly cover stories from the foreign countries.Under this circumstance, the Chinese-English translation of domestic sports news can in some way or another make up for the insufficiency in the international communication of domestic sports news. This translation practice report has selected several sports news items from the website Sina Sports based on its text types and text structure, and attempts to resolve the problems in translating news headline, lead and body through adaptation techniques such as expansion, deletion, editing, rephrasing, condensation, combination and remodeling in the Variation Translation Theory. The difficulties of this translation report come from three aspects:how to properly choose and flexibly apply adaptation techniques to the selection of sports news, how to improve the readability of the rendition and how to solve the problem of translating sports technical terms. To address these, deletion, condensation and combination can be used to cope with the selection of materials, rephrasing, editing and remodeling can be employed to increase readability and expansion is required to tackle the issue of terminology translation. The translator hopes to provide a reference for similar text type translation through combining the Variation Translation Theory with this practice.
