Journalistic English: Register Features And Translation Strategies

Journalistic English, one of the most important genres in English, has its own register features, demonstrated not only by the report of different subjects, but also by the particular way of journalistic English in which a certain subject is described.Journalistic English is not only a language carrier, but also a combination of relationships between language and society, people, and culture. Consequently, journalistic English has its own characteristics in terms of lexical selection, syntactic patterns and text structure. Journalistic Chinese also has its own register features that may be different from those of journalistic English in some aspects, but their aims are the same. We should represent the corresponding register features of journalistic English in Chinese in the process of translation. In view of this common ground of the intention of communicating, a very important concept of Halliday's systematic-functional grammar -- register is used as the theoretic foundation of this thesis.This thesis starts from expounding the importance of translating journalistic English, and then introduces the basics of journalistic English, including its register features. There are three parameters of register, that is, field, tenor, and mode. Field refers to what is happening or the nature of the events in process; tenor refers to the relationship between the communicators; mode means the role of language played in communication. The integration of the three parameters in English news text has also been elaborated. The stress is put on the strategies for translating English news to highlight the register features of the translated news. Many of the examples in this thesis are from the reading of the author, and there are also some cited from the works of others, and all of them are utilized to show the register features of journalism and the translation techniques of English news into Chinese.
