Ianjin Bankers’ Association Responding To The Financial Control Of The Puppet Government During The Anti-Japanese War

In recent years as the study of the financial groups in modern China--especially the study of Modern Bankers’ Associations--continues to advance, a series of high-quality academic achievements has emerged, which helps to completely examine the financial groups in modern China and to explore the relation of modern merchants groups to China’s early modernization in an all-round and thorough way. Tianjin Bankers’ Association, which was established in February1918, is one of the earliest domestic Modern Bankers’ Associations. Existing researches focus on discussing Tianjin Bankers’ Association before the Anti-Japanese War. This paper is on the basis of previous studies, and through the data about Tianjin Bankers’ Association involved in unpublished historical archives, issued historical documents and materials, diary, etc.,to further explore its operation situation and the internal and external activities during the Anti-Japanese War, hoping to promote the research of Tianjin Bankers’ Association history and modern Tianjin financial history, and to expand the study of the financial history of modern China, the study of the History of the Anti-Japanese War and other related researches.After the outbreak of Anti-Japanese War, Beijing and Tianjin fell into enemy hands in succession, and then Tianjin Bankers’ Association was forced to settle in Tianjin concession. Meanwhile, Tianjin financial situation became more complicated. Because of the outbreak of the Pacific war, the The operation situation of Tianjin Bankers’ Association and its main activities showed before and after two different stages. For its organization system, Tianjin Bankers’ Association adjusted its internal organization structure and operation mechanism in response to the changing situation at any time, but could not escape the penetration of the puppet government’s forces, and eventually reduced to control objects and instruments of domination of the puppet government. In terms of its internal and external activities, the key points involved mainly includes stabilizing Tianjin’s finance in the beginning period of the Anti-Japanese War, responding to a series of monetary and financial sabotage in the earlier stage of the Anti-Japanese War, being forced to accept and participate in the financial control of the puppet government in the later stage of the Anti-Japanese War, Maintaining financial markets operation in Tianjin and safeguarding for the interests of the same trade. Based on the investigation of Tianjin Bankers’ Association in all kinds of activities and its network system, this paper chooses the relationship of Tianjin Bankers’ Association with the puppet government as the center of the research, aiming to highlight the basic clue and the main characteristics of this study, in order to reveal the difficult experience of Organizational changes of Tianjin Bankers’ Association.
