The article based on The Anthology of Chen Yingzhen’s Novelpublished in2001from Hong Fan publisher in Taiwan tries to read intothe content of the thoughts hidden behind the texts from the commonimages of the characters in Chen’s novel, and to parallel the process ofthe history in Taiwan with Chen’s novel in different periods. The articlemainly analyzes the three topics, such as “leaving” and “missing thehometown”, the two different sets of women images and their allegories, and the embodiment and the experiences of Chen’s leftist thoughts in hisnovel. With the problems of the modernity in the development of thecapital, Chen accomplishes the hard critiques and thinks deeply with hisbroad horizon of the history in the hard knots of the colonial memory, the white terrorism, and the division system, and thus displays the dark, cruel and miserable “backstreet” behind the rich, happy surface in thecontemporary history of Taiwan.
