The Research On The Rite And Function Of The Shrine Of Tongren City In Guizhou Province

This thesis is with the shrine of Tongren city in Guizhou province as object ofstudy. what’s more, usingritual symbolism and cultural functionalism for reference,itinterprets the ritual symbolism and cultural function of shrine.In addition to thepreamble, this thesis is divided into six chapters, the first two of which describes thecontent and the composition of memorial tablet for a shrine, which sets the stage forlater interpretation. The third chapter focuses on the process of building the shrine andits ceremonies. The analysis of the content of memorial shrine will be given in fourthchapter. What’s more, the fifth chapter focuses on the analysis of shrine’s formation. Atlast, the expression of shrine’s function will be discussed in the sixth chapter.According to the deep investigation of shrine, the function of shrine plays the roleof being ancestral hall and temple, which holds all kinds of ceremonies and ritualactivities.Generally speaking, shrine has feature of “one shrine, multiple gods”.Avariety of gods are listed on a shrine visit. Furthermore, the gods expresses a variety ofmeanings. Since the Han nationality culture introduced to southwest, Shrine fuses thefaith of the locals.The change and acculturation of shrine symbol has happened fromtime to time. By holding all kinds of ceremonies of shrine, it expresses local people’sdeep faith to shrine, and it also manifests its sanctity. Under the ceremonies of the shrine,a variety of symbolic meanings will be expressed, for example, ancestral identity,specification of sacred secular power, values and behavior guide, etc. What’s more,through the ceremonies held in local regions, it reflects the history and social reality.Meanwhile, shrine has a profound cultural connotation. What’s more, cultural functionshave also been expressed in all kinds of ceremonies.
