A Study Of English Translation Strategies Of Quantifiers In The Tang Poetry

Translators at home and abroad have always showed great interest in Tang poetrytranslation and made many achievements in the translation practice. However, there are nounanimous and systematic standards of strategies for C-E quantifier translation in Tangpoetry. This thesis chooses quantifiers in Tang poetry as its object of study. By examiningthe translation strategies of quantifiers in Three Hundred Tang Poems, it attempts to findthe answers to the two questions:First, what strategies are deployed to translate the quantifiers in Three Hundred TangPoems? Do different types of quantifiers in Three Hundred Tang Poems use differenttranslation strategies?Second, why different translators choose different translation strategy for the sametype of quantifiers in Three Hundred Tang Poems?The study adopts the quantitative analysis as well as qualitative analysis. Data arecollected from four books to ensure the scientificalness and effectiveness. There are threemajor findings of this study.The first one concerns the translation strategies. It has been found that Translationstrategies for quantifiers in Hundred Tang Poems are Literal Translation and Version.The second finding shows that Literal Translation is mainly applied in the translationof calculating quantifiers and the majority of quantifiers indicating time and age, andVersion are the primary translation strategy for exaggerating quantifiers, culture-loadedquantifiers, and quantifiers of other types.The third one is that reasons for the selection of translation strategies are subject totranslation theories hold by translators, aesthetic beliefs of translators, and functions ofquantifiers in the original text. The major contribution of this thesis is to provide people who initiate translationpractice of Tang Poetry with a constructive and meaningful reference. It is asupplementary study of C-E translation on Tang poetry from the perspective of quantifiertranslation.
