On Howard Goldblatt's Translation Of Hong Gao Liang Jia Zu From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

Skopos theory includes three rules: Skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule.And Skopos rule is the most important among these three rules.Coherence rule and fidelity rule assist with Skopos rule so as to achieve the purpose of translation.Skopos rule requires that the purpose of translation determines the whole process of translation behavior.That is to say,the result determines the method.Coherence rule means that the version should consist with target language readers' expression and habit of thinking.So it can be read and accepted by target language readers.Fidelity rule requires that the version should be as faithful as possible to the source text.Of course,its fidelity and form depend on the translator's translation purpose.In Red Sorghum(target text),Howard Goldblatt's translation purpose is to make target language readers accept the version The novel takes Northeast Gaomi Township as the background.There are a lot of reduplicated words,Dongbei dialects and rhetoric in the version.In order to let the western readers know the novel,Howard Goldblatt needs to adopt special translation methods according to the translation purpose in translation process.It can be seen that Skopos theory can be applied to the study of English version of Hong Gao Liang Jia Zu.This thesis adopts Skopos theory to study the version under the guidance of three rules of Skopos theory.Under the guidance of Skopos rule,English version of Hong Gao Liang Jia Zu uses the methods of amplification,omission and conversion.Under the guidance of coherence rule,English version of Hong Gao Liang Jia Zu uses the methods of free translation and division.And under the guidance of fidelity rule,English version of Hong Gao Liang Jia Zu uses the method of literal translation.Through the detailed analysis of these translation methods,we can find out how the version meets the readers' expectations.Through research,firstly,Skopos theory applies to the analysis of English version of Hong Gao Liang Jia Zu.Secondly,under the guidance of three rules of Skopos theory,English version of Hong Gao Liang Jia Zu uses the methods of amplification,omission,conversion,free translation,division and literal translation.Therefore,through the analysis of this thesis,the author hopes to provide some references for future researchers to help Chinese culture go out.
