In the context of globalization, translation is no longer a pure linguistic transformation, but an activity deeply rooted in culture. It’s the communication and collision of cultures between different countries. With the development of "cultural turn", greater importance has been attached to target language’s culture and history as well as translator’s role in the translation studies. The study of translators is an indispensable part in translation studies, and it should not be ignored.Howard Goldblatt is considered as the chief translator of modern and contemporary Chinese literature. His translation has made a great contribution to the dissemination of Chinese literature and culture in the world. Meanwhile, he is a scholar who combines theory and practice together. After decades of literary translation practice, Howard Goldlbatt has formed his own four-in-one system of translation thoughts, namely translation with faithfulness, translation as rewriting, translation as betrayal and translation as cross-cultural communication.Howard Goldblatt’s translation thoughts are developed on the basis of previous theorists’achievements and his own experience, and they are featured by target reader’s acceptability. Howard Goldblatt claims that translators should be faithful to the author’s feeling about real life, and then the original flavor can be preserved; appropriate rewriting and betrayal are necessary to achieve overall faithfulness. The thesis is going to give a comprehensive study on Howard Goldlbatt’s translation thoughts, and analyze how he applies them in translation practice with his English version of Hong Gao Liang as a case study. Howard Goldblatt’s excellent bilingual competence, deep love for Chinese literature and literary translation, correct positioning of target readers as well as appropriate translation strategies have made his translations a great success. It provides Chinese translators with valuable reference to make Chinese literature to go to the world.
