The Study Of The Editions Of Defend Yanan

In "17-year" literature, Du Pencheng’s Defend Yanan is an important, epic, revolutionary historical novel. The edition change process of Defend Yanan has high value of research. For the purpose of pushing the study of Defend Yanan to a more rigorous, more scientific level and perfecting the system of "17-year" literature’s edition study, the editions of Defend Yanan has been selected as subject investigated of this thesis.This thesis combs the edition change process of Defend Yanan in order to show the twists and turns. In1949, Du Pengcheng began writing Defend Yanan. In early1954,"People’s Liberation Army Literature and Art" magazine and "People’s Literature" magazine published some chapters of this novel. People’s Literature Publishing House published the first edition of Defend Yanan in June1954, revised and published the second edition in January1956. Soon after the third edition was published in December1958, Defend Yanan was banned for political reasons so that the third edition is seldom seen now. After the "Cultural Revolution", the fourth edition was revised and published in1979. Except the four editions mentioned above, other editions are translations, reprints of the four editions or adaptations of Defend Yanan. Thus it can be seen, the1954edition,1956edition,1958edition and1979edition of Defend Yanan, which were published by People’s Literature Publishing House, have high value of research as the content of them have been revised.According to the result of collation, this thesis divides into three parts to expound the changes of the four main editions and the reasons of the changes. The three parts are "giving technical elaborations","improving artistic quality" and "strengthening ideological color". In the matter of "giving technical elaborations", the writer further standardized the Chinese characters, words and expressions and punctuation in this novel under the influence of "Modern Chinese Standardization". He also corrected the historical mistakes and added historical details in each edition in order to restore the history accurately. In the matter of "improving artistic quality", the writer followed the literature principle of socialist realism, under the influence of the comments he repeatedly revised the novel in character description and scene description. The writer revised the character description which is contrary to reality and enriched the details of character description. He gave more prominence to the epic scenes in the novel and emphasized the scenes which have deep educational meaning. In the matter of "strengthening ideological color", the writer accepted the restraints of political ideology of his own accord. He overstated the heroes by emphasizing the conflict between ourselves and the enemy and set some standardized examples of revolutionary military personnel, which meet norm of morality, ethics of revolution and ethics of war. In addition, the writer added a lot of materials about Chinese revolutionary history and politic slogan to the1979edition of Defend Yanan, so that the novel could be materials of revolutionary political education.Edition study is a field of the literature research that can reflect both macroscopic level and microcosmic level. Getting back to the content of text is the only way to have a objective view of the difference between each edition and the cause of the difference. This thesis focuses on the language modification of Defend Yanan, shows the edition change process of this novel entirely and fully. It combines culture study, literary study of edition with linguistic study of edition linguistically.
