English is being learned and spoken in almost every country of the globe in the21stCentury. Being long interacted with various languages and cultures, English notonly achieves internationalization but also causes nativization. Different varieties ofEnglish enrich the language itself in its process of internationalization andnativization. Among them, China English, as a variety combining of English languageand Chinese culture, has begun to gain more and more recognition in the linguisticand intercultural communication domains. As for English learning and teachingdomain in China, the enhancement in the acceptability of China English has impact onthe foreign language assessment system, in which fluency standard should beemphasized. The main target of English learning is to develop students’ ability to use Englishin an all-round way, in which communication skills should not be ignored. Theacceptance of China English can help shift the norms of accuracy from the monolithicnorm to pluralistic norms, and therefore make English teachers and learners pay moreattention to fluency standard, which is a crucial standard for communication skills.Self-efficacy is a mediation of skilled performance, especially the language skilldevelopment. The author believes a correlation study of self-efficacy and theacceptability of China English would have practical significance for foreign languagelearning and teaching. Therefore, the purpose of the study is to investigate thestatus-quo of the acceptability of China English among English majors and itsrelationship with English self-efficacy so as to provide some implications forenhancing the acceptability of China English. This thesis is a quantitative study which involved a total of203junior Englishmajors from Sun Yat-Sen University. Two questionnaires were employed to verify thecorrelation between the acceptability of China English and English self-efficacy. Thedata collected from the two questionnaires were analyzed by SPSS14.0. In particular, Independent-Sample T-test was conducted to test the differences between thevariables; Pearson Correlation Analysis was applied to explore the relationshipbetween English self-efficacy and the acceptability of China English; RegressionAnalysis was adopted to find out whether there is cause-effect relation between thetwo factors. The findings of the study are summarized as follows:(1) The number of English majors with low acceptability of China English ismore than that of those with high acceptability of China English. The lowacceptability students mainly distinguish from the high acceptability students in thedimensions self-identification of China English and taking China English as theEnglish teaching model.(2) English majors of high English proficiency distinguish from those of lowEnglish proficiency not only in the self-efficacies of traditional foreign language skillsbut also in communicative self-efficacy.(3) There is a significant positive correlation between the acceptability of ChinaEnglish and communicative self-efficacy, and they interact as both cause and effect. The findings indicate that it is of significance and necessity to raise theacceptability of China English among the English majors. And in order to achieve it,the norms of accuracy should be shifted from the monolithic norm to pluralistic normsand more attention should be paid to fluency standard as well as the role ofcommunicative self-efficacy playing in raising the acceptability of China English.
