The source text of this translation task is excerpted from several reports on the rise of China from the Congressional Research Service(CRS).The CRS serves as an intelligence system for the US government, with its main purpose and scope to provide intelligence consulting services for the Congress of the United States. Its analysis of China’s development path and evaluation of Sino-US relations will directly influence the U.S.government’s policies as well as other countries’ attitudes towards China.Through this translation practice, the translator intends not only to render the objective and detailed reference materials for people from all walks of life who are interested in Sino-US relations, but also to make contributions to enhancing our compatriots’ cultural confidence. The analysis of the source text is conducted from three perspectives: lexical resource, syntax and text type.In terms of lexical resource, the original text contains a large number of political and economic terminologies. In terms of syntax, the use of long and complex sentences containing extensive information distinguishes the whole text,so the translator should pay attention to both the style transformation and information transmission in translation. In terms of text type features, the style of the original text is precise and formal, and there are some words and sentences with ideology of the western country, which requires appropriate translation strategies.Due to the particularity of the source text, the translator should also pay attention to“political correctness” in the process of translation.Peter Newmark groups texts into three types in terms of their functions: the expressive text, the informative text and the vocative text.Based on this categorization,he proposes semantic translation and communicative translation. The communicative translation is target text oriented and reader-centered.Toury ’ s“ adequacy and acceptability ” puts forward methods to deal with “ political correctness” by maintaining the balance between adequacy and acceptability. The original text should be mainly classified as informative text considering that it aims toconvey objective facts and information to reader, and its theme is about the rise of China and the relationship between China and the United States.During the translation process, the translator encountered some translation difficulties caused by the characteristics of the text, including the translation of terminologies, titles, words concerning political correctness, and long and complex sentences, and he made an attempt to solve those problems based on Text Typology and Toury’s theory of “acceptability and adequacy”.The translator tried his best to convey the original writing intention of the source text in an acceptable way,and at the same time maintain a balance between the brevity and readability.
