As English is growing into a world language, there are more studies on differentvarieties of English and their societies, cognition and cultures. As one English Variety, China English has attracted scholars’ interest in the early1980s. China English and Chinglish are twin terms that of which studies have undergonemore than30years. Domestic studies include studies from the definitions and natures ofChina English and Chinglish, perspective of translation practice, studies concerningforeign language teaching, Sociolinguistics, contrastive studies of English and Chinese, etc. Scholars have noticed that there is no definite boundary between Chinglish and ChinaEnglish, and also admit the possibility from Chinglish to China English. However, nodetailed research has been carried out in the standards to distinguish the two terms. Thisthesis aims to clarify the standards to distinguish the two terms and probes into thetransformation from Chinglish to China English, thus raises suggestions on translation ofChinese-colored words.Chapter1introduces the main background knowledge of China English andChinglish and at the same time raises the purpose of the research, significance as well asthe framework of the whole thesis. Based on the precursors’ studies, which are illustratedin Chapter2, this thesis makes a thorough comparison of Chinglish and China English inChapter3, in which the definitions, similarities and differences are well depicted. Also inthis chapter, the thesis probes into the standards to distinguish Chinglish and ChinaEnglish and finds that the key factor to distinguish China English and Chinglish lies inthe acceptability of English native speakers. Based on this standard, Chapter4shows theChinese officially English newspapers and magazines together with English native mediaare the main sources of China English. From the standard it can be traced that there arepossibility and feasibility to transform Chinglish to China English. Then a small experiment is carried out to categorize China English in the lexical level based on thelinguistic materials from the sources above. In Chapter4, the theoretical possibilitiesfrom Chinglish to China English are illustrated from four aspects: English Variety Theory,Interlanguage Theory, Intercultural communication and language&power. From thecategorization of the transformation from Chinglish to China English, the thesis finds outthat political words, idioms and slang tend to be easier to transform. In Chapter5, fromthe studies, some suggestions on the translations of Chinese-colored words are elaborated, such as adopting more Pinyin in Chinese-colored words translation.Chapter6summarizes the findings of the thesis, i.e., the standards to distinguishChina English and Chinglish, theoretical possibility and feasibility of the transformationfrom Chinglish to China English and raises suggestions towards the current translationsof Chinese-colored words. And around the research methods in current China Englishstudies, the thesis makes an objective self judgment and points out the defects. At last, some suggestions for further studies are introduced. It also finds out that as a dynamiclinguistic phenomenon, China English will develop along with the development of Chinaas well as the whole world. To promote the development of China English, there is a longway to go.
