Teaching language has a variety of forms, in teaching Chinese phonetic as aforeign language, tongue twister is a fun and effective way to correct pronunciationand practice oral Chinese. It’s unique language features are liked by students ofdifferent levels. Using tongue twisters in phonetic teaching can not only have specialeffects on pronunciation training, but also contain many folk culture contents thatstudents interested in, so tongue twisters are useful resources for teacher to spreadChinese folk culture. Based on ontology research, tongue twister’s application inteaching Chinese phonetic as a foreign language were discussed in detail.This paper first discussed the origin and classification of tongue twisters, foundtongue twisters not only had their Language features with rhythm beauty of syllablecoordination, flexibility of using words, diversity of sentences selection, but also hadculture value in observing folk customs, regional dialects and age culture. Second, byunderstanding the usage of tongue twisters in current textbooks, we saw thenon-equilibrium feature of tongue twisters’ distribution, the choosing types wererelatively simple and had clearly practice purposes, appeared in the form of pinyinplus characters. However, we also found some tongue twisters’ contents were difficultto understand for they didn’t accord with the actual level of students. Again, based onthe second language acquisition theories, according to the tongue twisters’ principlesof selection and teaching, we had a teaching experiment for51students from Xinjiangprovince by taking certain teaching methods. In teaching practice, we insisted on theprinciple of i+1, made proper analysis and took a large number of practice, helpedstudents stride over the barrier of affective filter. Via transforming reading skills, triedour best to let students absorbed in entertainment. Finally, we made Suggestions onwriting textbooks and teachers’ teaching. We expect this study is useful for tonguetwisters and teaching Chinese phonetic as a second language.
