The feminist translation theory appears under the background of the combination of "culture turn" in translation and feminism. It brings gender concepts into literature translation. It also overthrows the authorities of the source texts, invisibility of translators and the translation criterion of faithfulness. Besides, it emphasizes the subjectivity of translators, the equality of the original texts and versions, the treason of translation and the elimination of gender discrimination toward women in language. The emergence and development of the feminist translation theory provide translation studies with a gender perspective, which has much profound significance. However, the positive significance of the feminist translation theory is queried by many people. It is thought to overemphasize the manipulation of language and the interference of translators, which makes women and translators be the authorities while authors and men become invisible. All of these doubts have much negative impact on the practice of the feminist translation theory. The author of this thesis tries to explain its positive influence on translators from the perspective of ideological manipulation according to Andre Lefevere’s manipulation theory. Such research approach is reasonable, because translation activities including feminine translation not only pay attention to the transformation of language, but also ideological factors like society, culture, politics, history, economy, religions etc. After stating the main ideas and influence of the feminist translation theory and the manipulation theory, this thesis analyzes ideological manipulation on Tao Jie’s translation of The Color Purple written by Alice Walker, an American black writer. As a feminist translator, Tao Jie chooses this novel and adopts the translation methods recommended by the feminist translation theory. In the process of translation, she shows her subjectivity, rewrites some of this novel, reduces the gender discrimination in language and obtains readers’ praise. All of her translation behaviors conform to contemporary ideology. After analysis from the perspective of ideological manipulation, this thesis indicates that the feminist translation theory is a kind of product of ideology and has great positive impact on translation. We should reduce the doubts about the feminist translation theory, approve its viewpoints and adopt its translation methods in order to promote both the development of feminism and translation.
