Wang Zuoliang enjoys extremely high prestige in the translation circle of China, and the majority of his classical prose translations are unceasingly appreciated. He attaches great importance to the status of translators, with a view that translation should not be merely machine-like imitation and translation itself is a process of re-creation. This idea finds its full expression in Wang Zuoliang’s translation ideas and prose translation. Taking Wang Zuoliang’s prose translation as the research material, this thesis mainly explores the manifestation of translator’s subjectivity in the translating process.Since the "Cultural Turn" in1980s, the translation studies have brought opportunity to improve the status of translator in the translation actiN’ities. The status of translator is gradually acknowledged by an increasing number of translation scholars, and the issue of translator’s subjectivity also becomes a hot research topic in translation circle both at home and abroad. It is beyond doubt that translator’s subjectivity exists in translation and exerts substantial effects on the entire translating process and the related translation effect. This thesis makes a preliminary analysis of the manifestation of translator’s subjectivity in Wang Zuoliang’s translation viewpoints and the process of prose translation. It firstly gives a comprehensive introduction to Wang Zuoliang, prose and his prose translation. A generalization from the aspects of philosophy and translation is given to trace the definition of the subject and subjectivity. Afterwards, a concise analysis presents the characteristics of translator’s subjectivity and digs the disregard of translator’s subjectivity in the traditional views and its recognition after the "Cultural Turn." Discussion on manifestation of the subjectivity is attached in broad terms. At last. in the main body of this thesis, plenty of examples taken seriously from Wang Zuoliang"s classical prose translations are given to support the detailed analyses and illustrate the manifestation of the translators" subjectivity in translating process. At the end of this thesis, the author makes the conclusion that Wang Zuoliang fully plays his subjectivity in the process of prose translation, mainly reflecting in three aspects:text selection, text interpretation and expression process. The author hopes that the combination of this case study and system theory can not only promote the theoretical research on translator’s subjectivity, but also provide useful guidance to translating practice of prose.
