A Study Of Translator Wang Zuoliang

Wang Zuoliang is a renowned educator, the authority of British literature studies circle, the inaugurator of comparative literature studies, an outstanding linguist, an excellent writer and poet and most importantly he is a prominent translator and a translation theoretician. Wang Zuoliang has translated and introduced plenty of excellent Chinese classical, modern, contemporary literary works to Western readers. Meanwhile, Wang Zuoliang has translated and introduced a large number of foreign literary works to the Chinese readers. Moreover, Wang Zuoliang has made great achievement in the translation theories. Wang Zuoliang does translation work in the process of his literature research career. Wang Zuoliang constantly summarizes his views on translation while he is doing translations and pondering them and he puts forward his distinctive views of translation. Later on, Wang Zuoliang's views on translation develop into systematic and advanced translation thoughts, including his views on cultural translation, stylistic translation, poetry translation and compilation of foreign literature. Therefore, Wang Zuliang and his translation theories and translation practice is worth studying.Wang Zuoliang is an outstanding translator. This thesis tries to make a comprehensive study of the translation activities and translation thoughts of Wang Zuoliang based on the achievements of former scholars'study on Wang Zuoliang and the Polysystem Theory and Hermeneutics. This thesis pays attention to the position and canonicity of Wang Zuoliang's translation in Chinese literary polysystem and focuses on main translation thoughts of Wang Zuoliang including his views on cultural translation, stylistic translation, poetry translation and compilation of foreign literature. This thesis tries to find out the origin, connotation, development, characteristics and significance of Wang Zuoliang's translation thoughts in order to make the readers have a clearer comprehension of the translator. Wang Zuoliang has made great contribution to the development to translation development in China. It is meaningful to do intensive and systematic research on Wang Zuoliang's translation practice and translation thoughts.The whole thesis is composed of five chapters:Chapter one gives a brief introduction of the objective and research significance of the thesis.Chapter two is about the literature review, including the previous studies on Polysystem Theory, previous studies on Hermeneutics and previous studies on Wang Zuoliang.Chapter three is about the theoretical basis, including the most important concepts explanation of the Polysystem Theory, the criticism of the Polysystem Theory and the three basic concepts of Hermeneutics.Chapter four analyses the position and canonicity of the translation of Wang Zuoliang from the perspective of the Polysystem Theory and analyze the subjectivity of the translator and his views on translation from the perspective of Hermeneutics.Chapter five provides a summary of the whole thesis.
