Professor Wang Zuoliang,who is a well-known translator,educator and English literature researcher,makes tremendous contribution to literature translation,foreign language teaching and English literature studies in China.Most of his translations are clear and natural,which enjoy high popularity among Chinese readers.His preference for classical English prose lays the foundation of his high quality and great influential prose versions,which makes him enjoys high reputation in translation circle.This research aims to probe into Wang Zuoliang's prose translation style through selecting Francis Bacon's,Jonathan Swift's,William Cobbett's representative prose works and Wang Zuoliang's corresponding translations as research materials according to the order of English prose development.In view of the fact that only a few impressive analyses which seem to be lacking in objectivity and comprehensiveness have been done about the study of Wang Zuoliang's translation style.This dissertation,under the guidance of Liu Miqing's Stylistic Markers Theory,through reviewing Wang Zuoliang's translation achievements and translation thoughts,the development and characteristics of English prose,with a combination of the characteristics of prose translation,employs contrastive analysis,qualitative evaluation and quantitative analysis method to analyze Zuoliang's translation of the formal markers and non-formal markers in the original works,thus making a relatively objective and comprehensive study of Wang Zuoliang's prose translation style.The research shows that Wang Zuoliang takes full advantage of concise Chinese characters in his translations,employs abundant sentence patterns skillfully,and fully reproduces the stylistic markers on the basis of accurate conveyance of contents and emotion in the sources texts.In general,Wang Zuoliang's prose translation style can be summarized as “faithfulness”,“conciseness”,“skillfulness”.As for prose from different times and different writers,Wang Zuoliang flexibly selects appropriate expression in the target language in accordance with elegance,depth,and speakingtone of the originals,which shows “flexibility” in his prose translation style.In a word,Wang Zuoliang does an excellent work in understanding the contents and reproducing style of the original.At last,this thesis points out that studies on Wang Zuoliang's prose translation style may provide a reference for studies on Wang Zuoliang's translation style of other literary genres.In addition,a new perspective is provided for studying other translators' translation style.In the meantime,this research inspires translators to develop and present their own translation style in literature translation actively.
