Wang Zuoliang, a renowned scholar in the academic field of China, has devoted all his lifetime to English literary research and translation. Being proficient in English literature, literary history, and comparative literature, he is also an accomplished expert in translation theory and practice. He is prolific in translation theory with his profuse corpora, including Translation: Thought and Practice, A Sense of Beginning: Studies in Literature and Translation and Some Observations on Verse Translation, which are a representative of the mainstream of modern translation theory in China in the 1980s. While probing into translation theory, Wang Zuoliang has presented readers a mass of classic translations as well. So far, Wang Zuoliang's international fame roots in his achievements in literary research and drama translation and there exists little detailed criticism and scarce research on Wang Zuoliang as a translator. Domestically, an overwhelming majority of remarks on his translation accomplishments are general introductions and analyses of his certain specific translations, while systematic and detailed studies on Wang Zuoliang's translation theoretical thoughts, practice and the relationship between the two is still in the need.This thesis intends to carry out a multi-prospective and systematic study on Wang Zuoliang the translator. By relatively thorough analyses of his theoretical thoughts and comparative studies of Wang Zuoliang's and other translators' translations in terms of style, reader's response, faithfulness etc, the traits of his translation are fully revealed. In translation theory, it is the author's contention that Wang Zuoliang is a pioneer dedicating himself to the advancement of modern translation theory in China. Inheriting the tradition and using Western translation theory for reference, he has made distinctive and independent comments on Yan Fu and stressed that the reader's response should be given great importance, a very illuminating and invaluable act in the translation arena of the 1980s.
