| Simultaneous Interpreting (SI) is a major form in interpreting andinformation transmitting. In the process of interpreting, simultaneity, the timepressure, and some other factors increase the difficulties for interpreters tointerpret simultaneously. Especially when the relative clause appears in SI, itsdifferent positions of the attributives in English and Chinese make the relativeclause a problem-trigger in SI. Now, with the purpose of improving interpreters’performance, many researches have done on handling the sentences or handlingthe relative clauses, and corresponding strategies are put forward in SI on copingwith sentence or relative clauses as well. However, there is few investigation madeon the aspect of the strategy feasibility, to be specific, from the perspective of MTIstudents. What’s more, it is still uncertain whether those strategies contributegreatly to giving an effective guidance to the MTI students’ interpreting practice.In this study, the subjects consist of eight MTI second-year interpretingmajors (MTI students) and one professional interpreter. By means of thecomparative analysis on the coping strategies adopted by those subjects, togetherwith the questionnaire and interview, the study centers on probing into the strategyfeasibility from the perspective of MTI students and the elements affecting theMTI students’ employment of strategy so as to improve the MTI students’ abilityof flexible application of strategies. The study has reached the followingconclusions: firstly, some of the strategies are not applied by the MTI students tocope with the relative clauses; secondly, the majority of MTI students are notequipped with the strategy consciousness on handling some certain relativeclauses. Finally, the pre-existing knowledge, short-term memory, andcomprehensive competence are the key factors affecting MTI students’employment of strategy.Therefore, to employ those strategies efficiently and flexibly, it is of crucialimportance for the MTI students to enhance the strategy consciousness, improvethe ability of recognizing the fixed sentence patterns, and receive the training onmemory and comprehensive competence. Only by doing so can the MTI studentsadopt the optimum strategy in handling the relative clauses and facilitate efficientand smooth interpretation output. |
