Nowadays, exchange activities in international engineering area have become much more frequent. China, as an important economy, also constructively participates in international engineering bidding activities. Bidding document, as an important communicative document, plays a crucial role in China’s entry into the world bidding tractions. Therefore, translation of bidding documents has become one of the most common businesses for translation agencies.However, for most translators who are of non-civil-work related majors, mastering of only bilingual converting ability is far from adequate. Sufficient pre-translation work is required.This report, based on the author’s practical translation experience of engineering bidding document, taking practical translation text as its study materials, will describe the essential aspects in preparation work, text analysis, and text translation. The translation project this report will study is a technical bidding document for a pier project. The task of the author is to translate around10000English words into Chinese. The content of the text is mainly about concrete and steel structure.During the process of translation, the author fulfills her task by careful preparation, including collecting glossaries of technical terms, choosing suitable CAT software, reading relative parallel texts and analyzing the linguistic features of both English and Chinese versions of technical bidding documents. This report reveals that careful pre-translation work, full comprehension of stylistic features of the text in both Chinese and English languages is essential to translate in a field which the translator is unfamiliar with.
