On Press Interview Consecutive Interpreting

This thesis describes one consecutive interpreting (CI) task conducted by the author for an interview during T10Cultural Tourism Forum with Chenine Bhathena, Greater London Authority’s London2012Creative Programmer as the interviewee and analyses the preparations and interpreting process to discuss difficulties of English-Chinese (E-C) CI as well as possible strategies and solutions.The last section of Introduction and the first chapters serve as an introduction to the background information and task process. The thesis divides the process into "Pre-interpreting Preparations" and "Interpreting Process" by time order, presenting the transcript of both the original speeches and the author’s interpreting and analyses it based on discourse analysis method.Typical examples are selected from the notes and transcript for further analysis in chapter two from two perspectives:the role that note-taking plays in interpreting process and note-taking techniques employed in this task.Chapter three serves as the core of this thesis, consisting of case studies in terms of interpreting techniques as well as problems and defects. The first section of this chapter intends to explore the creative application of anticipation technique in pre-interpreting and interpreting progressions. In the second section, concerning explicitation, the author categorises and discusses on the related cases. The last section analyses the problems and defects in terms of interpreting techniques and provides possible solutions.Through description and analysis, the study shows the following conclusions. Firstly, coordinate bilingual interpreters are not the sole prerequisite for successful interpreting. A compound bilingual can make up his or her bilingual competence by organised and effective pre-interpreting preparations. Secondly, besides the pre-interpreting phase, preparations to a CI task can also be done when the conversation starts including analysis of speech type and anticipation. Thirdly, the target language (TL) of press interview CI values its flexibility, eloquence and literary grace, which requires the interpreter to save the most of time and energy for TL outputting and to depend largely on memorising instead of note-taking. Fourthly, besides the interpreting of the conversation, interpreter plays a leading role in facilitating the communication and coping with emergencies. Fifthly, explicitaion, as a translation technique and theory, should be applied in interpreting process, especially for press interview interpreting assignment, for its efficiency in application and significance for interpreting studies.
