A Study Of Translation Of Reduplicated Words In Tang And Song Ci Poems From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

China is famous for her lasting culture and profound history. In the21st century, Chinese economy and culture make great contribution to the development of the whole world. Therefore, it is essential to present Chinese culture to the world. Translators on English translation of Chinese classics (ETCC) have paid great attention to the translation of Chinese culture, especially classic Chinese literatures. Chinese Ci poems can be considered as a wonderful flower, growing sturdily on the fecund soil of Chinese historic culture treasure and representing completely Chinese national cultural information and the intelligence of laboring people. Moreover, the reduplicated words (RWs) in Chinese Ci poems with abundant artistic expressive force and deep culture and emotional connotation can be named as the glittering dewdrop on this wonderful flower. Therefore, it has become one of the urgent and practical topics to make a research on the translation of the RWs in Chinese Ci poems represented by Tang&Song Ci poems, which is helpful and useful to spread Chinese traditional culture.However, because of the great differences between Chinese and western cultures, there exist some difficulties to translate the RWs in Chinese Ci poems. A slight mistake can make the translated version lose the cultural and emotional factors included in the source texts. Under this circumstance, the intended readers will not understand the rhyme, aesthetic value, artistic conception or other charm of Chinese Ci poems.Since Tang&Song Ci Poems take the major part of Chinese Ci poems, this thesis mainly talks about the translation of the RWs in Tang&Song Ci poems. Firstly, this author makes an analysis of the definition and categories of RW and then discusses the similarities and differences between the RWs in Chinese and English cultures to present the features and functions of RW. Secondly, the author gives a brief introduction to the previous studies on translation of the RWs in Tang&Song Ci Poems. Moreover, the author introduces the theoretical framework used in this research—the Skopos theory, mainly referring to Skopos’three rules for translation. Finally, this thesis points out the translation strategies of the RWs in Tang&Song Ci Poems from the perspective of Skopos theory.There are six chapters in this thesis.Chapter One is the introductory part. It gives a brief introduction to the research background, significance and purpose along with the overall structure of this thesis. In today’s world, the international cooperation and communication have become more important, and ancient Chinese books are more and more popular. This thesis wants to serve as a modest spur for the transmission of the Chinese culture on Ci poems through the research on the translation of the RWs in Tang&Song Ci Poems.The second chapter will give an overview of the translation of the RWs in Tang&Song Ci Poems. In this chapter, this thesis will introduce the definition of key terms in this thesis and categories of RW and discuss the similarities and differences between RWs in Chinese and Western cultures. Due to the importance of RW and its translations, it is necessary for translators to translate the RWs in Tang&Song Ci Poems successfully. Although some researches at this aspect have been done before, there are still some problems needed to be solved.In Chapter Three, this author will look into the theoretical framework of this thesis. Skopos theory, raised by German scholars, views translation from a different perspective and takes translation as an action. Meanwhile, according to the Skopos theory, the success of a translation depends on whether it has achieved its purpose. It emphasizes the functionality of the target text in the target culture.Chapter Four will mainly introduce the research questions and methodology adopted in this thesis, consisting of a brief introduction research questions, data collection and methodology.Chapter Five is the main body of this thesis.In this chapter, this author will introduce the strategies for the translation of the RWs in Tang&Song Ci Poems from the perspective of Skopos theory. In other words, this thesis will analyze the translation strategies for the translation of the RWs in Tang&Song Ci poems under the guidance of three principles of Skopos theory, including the skopos rule, coherence rule and loyalty rule. In the practical translation, translators should notice the differences between Chinese and western cultures to make correct judgment and assumption about the purposes of the intended readers when they read the target text. Meanwhile, translators should consider the cognitive scope of the intended readers to represent the best translated versions to achieve certain purpose. Therefore, in the practical translation, translators can adopt specific translation strategies, for example, adjective, adverb, repetition, synonyms and other approaches. Moreover, translators should also consider the roles and function of the intended readers for the target texts. All in all, this author analyzes the RWs in Tang&Song Ci Poems and proposes different translation strategies based on the Skopos theory.The last chapter will make a conclusion. In this chapter, the author will summarize the major findings of this thesis and point out the deficiencies and limitations. Meanwhile, this author will also propose some suggestions for future study in this field.This thesis aims to analyze the translation strategies on the RWs in Tang&Song Ci poems based on studying and analyzing some translated Tang&Song Ci Poems by some scholars. This author wants to make some contributions to the research on the translations of the RWs in Tang&Song Ci Poems, even in all the ancient Chinese books.
