Marc Chagall (1887-1985), one of the greatest artists of the20thcentury, is regardedas the pioneer of the Expressionism by Art Historians. Chagall’s creative works wereinfluenced by different schools but managed to keep his own style of coloring andmodeling. Like his peer artists, Chagall worked with Oil, Grisaille, Engraving andother art forms. And chromolithograph in particular is Chagall’s favorite. Many previous research on Chagall’s works starts from his Oil Painting and Grisailleand suggests that the color in those two forms are sufficient for his personal emotionalexpression. However, I believe that Chagall’s personal emotions about “Going home”and “love” are better expressed via the colors in his Chromolithographic works, whichwere produced under strict restrictions of the materials and methods. This paper will use references from Chagall’s memoir My Life, in which the artistdescribed the recreation of the color of his “hometown”, as well as his usage of colorsin his oil painting and grisaille works; to attempt to illustrate the modeling andcoloring elements of his Chromolithographic works and his expressive methods.Hence we hope to explore the relationship between color and Chagall’s personalemotions about “Hometown”.
