George Frideric Handel (1685-1759), alongside J.S Bach (1685-1750), pushed western baroque music to a new height. Handel created thirty two oratorios in all his life, especially Messiah which is so famous that some parts are still being displayed worldwide in the21th century, so why? It is worth exploring! It is also the fundamental cause for the author to make research herein. The whole text is divided into seven chapters. The first chapter summarizes and analyzes the results of previous researches, as well as the perspective, methods and significance etc of this academic research. The second chapter discusses the tree most important periods in Handel’s life. Through the research on his life, to find the relations between his life path&creation experience and religion, the reason why his works were affected by religion so deeply could be found. The third chapter discusses the political, economic and cultural status of England in the18th century. Any work is not isolated or occasionally generated, but it is much related with the social history background where the composer was. Messiah was born when England was in the conditions of highly loose and tolerant religious culture&social atmosphere as well as rapid developing industrial and commercial revolution. The fourth chapter mainly analyzes the main religious schools and their doctrines and concepts in England at that time. The fifth chapter mainly analyzes the three important extracts from Messiah from the point of music noumenon to reveal its religious thoughts and cultural innovation. The sixth chapter makes comparison between the religious thoughts and cultures of Handel’s Messiah and Bach’s Matthaus Passion, and points out the similarity and difference on both authors’religious thoughts and cultures. The seventh chapter gives a summary. It is thought:Handel’s legendary life is great and glorious. Handle was a self-made man, but he could got hold of and achieved skilled and superb composing techniques and outstanding capability in form and structure, and he could consciously combines history and realistic life with the dramatic properties of the oratorio which was pushed to a new historical height for the first time later. The oratorio Messiah is full of heroic property, triumphalism and happiness of being saved, where there is no any obstacle but well communication between human and the God. Messiah is a fight song against the restraints on human and humanity by traditional religion doctrines such as original sin and atonement etc.At last, it points out:there are essentially close relations between Handel’s great life&prosperous artistic achievements, and its tolerant and free religious thoughts&beliefs as well as the religious cultures of divinity and human rights first. The religious thoughts and culture of divinity and human rights first created Handel’s magnificent and legendary life; tolerant and free religious thoughts and beliefs cultivated Handel’s prosperous artistic achievements. The vitality of oratorio Messiah relies on its great religious thoughts and culture, which reflects the real significance and value of the oratorio Messiah.
