Translationese In News Translation

During the process of globalization, the communication among different languages becomes more and more frequent. Therefore, translation plays a vital role in the communication among countries. The thesis introduces the notion of "translationese" firstly; it is followed with the literature review both at home and abroad, the causes of translationese and their corresponding solutions. The research of translationese is employed for the purpose of avoiding translationese and meanwhile improving the quality of the translated works.The thesis begins with the understanding of translationese, and there are many explanations of it nowadays. As the translator Nida has pointed out in his book The Theory and Practice of Translation that translationese is a "formal fidelity" with no constant attention to the content and the effect of the message, which is a kind of mechanical transplanting of the form and the sentence structure of the source language into those of the target language. Nida assumes that a good translated work should not "exist in its grammatical and stylistic forms in any trace of awkwardness or strangeness". Then the thesis gradually arrives at the conclusion that translationese only strictly sticks to the form of the source language without consideration of the customs and traditions of the target language, making the translated works illogical and ambiguous. Therefore. translationese is also named the "foreignization" and "the third language".The thesis introduces translationese in the beginning, and then it is followed with the literature review not only in West but also in China, translationese in news translation, the causes of translationese and respective solutions. The thesis mainly includes the following five chapters:In the first chapter, it explains the translationese, and proposes the definition of translationese both at home and abroad. From these different statements, the author summarizes the characteristics of translationese meanwhile some examples of translationese in news translation have been provided to illustrate these characteristics.The second chapter is literature review; it focuses on the studies of translationese both in West and in China. Some famous translators such as Nida, Duff, Shuttleworth and Cowie, Zhao HuiJun, Lin Yutang, Tong Haiyan have researched in translationese.The third chapter deals with the causes of translationese; it explains the main causes of translationese in two aspects:language and culture. More exactly, English and Chinese are two different languages; they have different expressions, different customs and traditions. Besides, there are some cultural differences between English and Chinese owing to their different origins of culture and their different values. More still, the author also puts forward some causes of translationese based on her own understanding. Accordingly, there are some examples of translationese in news translation used to exemplify these causes.In the chapter four, it explores the solutions of translationese in accordance with the causes which have been mentioned above. First, the translator should show concern to the differences between the two languages-English and Chinese. Second, the translator had better keep the equivalence of the source language and the target language as much as possible instead of restricting himself in the text. Then, the combination of different translation strategies can avoid translationese with effectiveness and efficiency. Lastly, it is also essential for a translator to enrich the knowledge and improve the performance.In the last chapter, conclusions are drawn concerning the translationese, and meanwhile the author’s own ideas and thoughts of translationese are stated.
