| Tolstoy:A Russian Life is a biography. The author sheds light on Tolstoy’s remarkable life. At the same time, she makes a further study on Tolstoy’s influence on Bolsheviks. It is inevitable that the text contains abundant historical and cultural messages. In order to keep the original style of source text, show the historical and cultural background of it and narrow the distance of between the author of source text and the readers of target text, I adopt the strategy of thick translation in the translation process.At the beginning of this translation report, I describe the translation task. And then, I introduce the translation strategy, thick translation, which matches the characteristics of biographical literature, and the origin of it. In the following part, I introduce the translatorial identity and the differences between it and translator’s identity, analyze my translation involving thick translation under the researcher’s identity, and find the two categories of annotations with different subjective intentions of translator.Different categories of annotations have the same purpose, which is to make further interpretation of the source text, cross the cultural chasm, narrow the distance between the author of source text and the readers of target text, and at last to achieve the effective exchange of linguistic symbols. During translation process, translator can add annotations with his/her necessity to show the rich text for his/her readers. |
