On The Translation Of Modern Chinese Dramas From The Adequacy Of Skopos Theory

Chinese unique agricultural ideology makes modern drama become popular only in the profound cultural areas. Comparing with western countries, Chinese common people have lower understanding about modern drama and not so many scholars pay attention to this field. Fewer researches and the duality (readability&performability) of modern drama become the negative factors of translating modern dramas. This phenomenon is harmful to the exchange of western drama culture and the spread of Chinese drama culture."Translation purpose determines its action", is a new idea of skopos theory, an approach to translation proposed in the1970s by Reiss&Vermeer. This idea was developed from the dominant concept of "translation equivalence" which has confined translators for so long. It provides a spacious and profound translation references for the translation of modern drama. An analysis of specific requirements of adequacy, a concept in skopos theory, will lead to the standard of modern drama translation and the choice of translation methods in modern drama.This thesis aims to apply the skopos theory to analyze the English version of The Family. It reveals a correspondence between the four specific translation requirements (intelligibility, brevity, musicality and individuality) and the translation methods adopted by the translator Ying Ruocheng. So the author makes it sure:Due to the differences between Chinese and western culture, the cultural and linguistic untranslatability have existed for a long time in the progress of translating modern drama and the skopos theory has deep reference to solve the above phenomenon.
