Dongba characters and Dongba paintings come originally from China’s ethnic minority Nakhi. Nakhi people have their own religious belief: Dongba Religion. They create and keep their own ancient and unique culture:Dongba Culture. Dongba characters and Dongba paintings as an important part of Dongba Culture and precious wealth of the Nakhi record the origin, life and customs of the Nakhi, which is better for future generations to grasp the integrity of Dongba culture and for the inheritance and development of Dongba culture.Entering an era of rapid technological and social change globally, conducting in-depth study of the culture behind Dongba characters and Dongba paintings and blending their visual elements ingeniously into graphic design will not only present China’s national characteristics and carry forward the local culture, but also enrich the form of graphic design.This paper attempts to take Dongba characters and Dongba paintings and their visual elements as study objects to study their applications in graphic design from the angle of artistic design and to show their unique beauty from the angle of graphic design so as to deepen the knowledge and understanding of them and explore their application value in modern design and their effect and revelation on graphic design for the better use of them. This paper firstly describes the background, methods, purpose, significance and present research situation at home and abroad of this study. Secondly, a simple introduction is made of the Nakhi, Dongba characters and Dongba paintings and their development and relationship, and a summary of the characteristics of visual elements of Dongba characters and Dongba paintings is made after analyzing the structure of these visual elements and in order to provide a theoretical basis for the application of these elements in graphic design. Thirdly, an analysis is made of the application of these visual elements in the three fields of graphic design: logo design, packaging design and poster design by combining actual cases, through which to anlyze the effect of these visual elements on graphic design from three perspectives of creation concept, creation methods and creation style. Lastly, a conclusion is drawn of the revelation of these visual elements upon graphic design from three aspects of their function, ethnic characteristics and the integration of the "form" and "meaning" in graphic design.
