As the language symbol of the Naxi people, the unique shape of Dongba characters contains the graphic meaning pursued by modern people. Its graphical form has high information recognition and versatility, which meets the aesthetic needs of viewers in the era of picture reading. It evokes the viewer's association, which also lays the foundation for its application in modern graphic design.Based on the characteristics of Dongba characters, this paper first analyzes the features of Dongba characters with their original graphics and abstract symbolization based on the analysis of the structural elements and the glyph structure of Dongba characters. At the same time, combining the design concept of visual communication,it further discusses that Dongba characters are not only linguistic symbols for recording information, but also artistic symbols with a certain aesthetic value, including visual art features such as natural beauty, exaggerated beauty, and form beauty.Secondly,Dongba characters are introduced into modern graphic design, and the combination of Dongba characters and modern graphic design is further analyzed and constructed, which mainly includes the reconstruction design of a single symbol and the combined design of multiple symbols. Finally, based on Dongba's concept of word creation and character creation, the two design methods obtained from the analysis are comprehensively used to artistically design the primitive and naive national elements to create decorative and interesting features that meet the contemporary aesthetic needs. The visual form is not only the inheritance and development of the primitive cultural element of Dongba characters, but also an artistic exploration and attempt on the combination of national elements and modern design.
