On Editing Translation Of English Political News Under Functionalist Theory Approach

Nowadays, under the background of globalization, the exchange of information is more and more popular; therefore, the translation of the political news from the overseas English newspaper is becoming more and more important. In the process of the news translation, appropriate adjustments and relevant translation strategies must be used. Strictly speaking, these strategies can be called editing translation, for they disobey the traditional translation standard of "faithfulness".As one of the most important theories of editing translation, Functionalist Theory aims the target reader as the essential factor in translation and the target reader that determines the translation strategies. Because the news translation serves the target reader, it cannot survive without the target readers. The success of the news translation depends on the fact that whether the news translation could be accepted by the target readers or not. It is the target readers’ acceptability, which is the most important factor to translate the news.The editing translation of the English political news can be guided by the approach of the Functionalist Theory. English political news has its typical features, such as authority, filled with political jargons/slogans, neologisms and quotations, etc. What is more, the Chinese version is especially constructed for the readers in Mainland, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan of China. Thus, in order to make the Chinese version more reader-friendly, major editing translation skills are most frequently used in the translation, such as deletion, combination and addition, etc.The related study of English news translation has been discussed in recent years. There are many research perspectives to choose, such as languages, culture, literature and so on. However; in the past research of English news translation study, only a few researches have studied the editing translation of English political news.Supported by the Functionalist Theory, this thesis intends to present an academic and practical study of editing translation of English political news, especially its steps and skills. The thesis starts with the general introduction of the concept of news and news translation. Then editing translation of English political news has been studied, including its importance and affecting factors. Meanwhile, steps and skills of editing translation of English political news are illustrated as well. In conclusion, under the highlight of Functionalist Theory, several problems of editing translation of English political news can be solved properly.
