Along with the rapid development of Sino-Foreign trade, there is a growingdemand of high-quality escort interpreters in domestic organizations and Sino-Africancorporations. However, due to its informality, escort interpreting is always ignored byinterpreters. Based on the characteristics of interpreters paying too much attention tointerpreting skills and ignoring the non-interpreting elements which have a profoundeffect on team-escort interpreting quality, the report makes a further study of escortinterpreting and requirements of escort interpreters. As a practice report of escort interpreting, it describes a three-month escortinterpreting task on Training Course on Embroidery Techniques for African Countrieswhich is organized by the Commerce Department of Hunan Province in2012. Based onthe practice and the characteristics of non-interpreting aspects causing more problemsthan interpreting aspects in team-escort interpretation, the report mainly presentsproblems caused by cultural differences, unfamiliar words and accent barriers. Thensome relative strategies and suggestions are proposed to each problem in order to bringsome benefit for myself and other Sino-African team-escort interpreters.Based on the task description and case analysis, the author considers that aqualified escort interpreter should be equipped with some qualities as follows:Firstly, make full preparations, including program preparation and interpretingcontent preparation. Secondly, be familiar with cultural differences which are cruciallyimportant in team-escort interpreting. Thirdly, know relative strategies of unfamiliarwords and accent barriers. Any way can be tried if you can interpret it. Finally, havestrong communication ability, adjustment capacity and responsibility which are overallquality requirements for team-escort interpreters. When encountering problems, escortinterpreters have to react quickly and deal with them timely. The job of an escortinterpreter is not only in interpreting, but also in cultural transmission. Thereforeescort interpreters are also cultural transmitters. In a word, a qualified escortinterpreter plays a key role in improving interpreting quality and even in the wholeinterpreting program.
