Due to its diplomatic and political characteristics, press conference of NPC and CPPCC can be taken as a cross-cultural communicative act with specific aims which should not be achieved without the participance of an excellent consecutive interpreter. As a result of the differences lying between the speaker and the listeners in their social status, political stance and cultural background, interpreting is a tremendous challenge for the interpreter. This survey, aiming to reveal major features and generating process of diplomatic CI, is instructive for the the interpreter’s practical operation.Based on the interaction models, this thesis is going to conduct a research into the features of diplomatic CI on the case study of press conference interpreting. The interaction models are the achievements of lots of western scholars and researchers after an accumulation of years of hardwork, among them, Franz. Pochhacker is rather representative. Those models have great guiding significance and values towards interpreting study. Constellation, communication and text/discourse are the three major branches of interaction models. In specific, constellation models have identified all the participants’roles involved in the interpreting interacting activities, focusing on the core role of an interpreter, reflecting features of individual interactant on the communicative event and highlighting culture’s significance in the interpreting process. Communication model takes information processing as the core of communicative activities. It is believed that in the interpreting process, all the information given out by the speaker is coded in the source text and decoded in the target language through interpreter-this transforming channel. Elaborating on a text-theoretical model of the translation process, text/discourse model reveals relations among the speaker, the interpreter and the target text receiver in the process of the communicative information flow. On this basis, Basil Hatim and Ian Mason introduce the concept of word and discourse processing into interpreting study, and apply discourse theory (including "texture","structure" and "context"), based on the tripartite model, to differentiate various types of interpreting, which provides favorable conditions for the further interpretation of the features of simultaneous, consecutive and liaison interpreting. Through the case study of interpreting of the eleventh NPC and CPPCC via the interaction model, the author put specific requirements on the interpreter involved in diplomatic interpreting, which is of extremely practical meaning towards his/her interpreting activities. There are three chapters in this thesis, along with the introduction part which mainly describes the purpose and significance of this research and briefs on its framework. In the first chapter, the concept of diplomatic interpreting is briefed, especially the definition and features of it. Relevant researches in recent years and their shortcomings are also displayed in this chapter, and the future direction of this study has been analyzed as well. In chapter two, the interaction model theory based by this thesis is introduced, along with its developing procedure and major theoretical achievements. At the end of this chapter, the instructive significance of this model to diplomatic CI is disclosed. Chapter three mainly discusses the guiding significance and sound effects of interaction model in the concrete application with the press conference interpreting of the fifth session of the eleventh NPC and CPPCC. The conclusion part, sums up the achievements and limitations on this research on one hand, and explores the direction into this sphere on the other hand. For overall, China’s diplomatic CI is still in its developing stage and the relevant researches on it are either on the practical operation without theories’ guiding or on the theoretical level merely, which needs to be advanced further. The author hopes that this research may do a favor to the interpreter’s interpreting activities.
