A Report On Interpreting For Austrian Tourism Workshop 2019 Based On The Interpreter's Subjectivity

This report is about the author's work as an interpreter in a tourist event in 2019.This event was mainly about promoting various cities in Austria,and it took place mainly in the form of one-to-one meeting.As the author was providing interpreting service for the tourist office of Graz,an Austrian city,his preparation in relation to knowledge about this city,especially its tourist resources,was of great significance.In addition,as this was basically a one-to-one meeting and a tourist event,an interpreter should take into consideration the speaking styles and potential key points,and employ certain interpreting strategies accordingly.The most important question was certainly how to make preparation and what strategies to employ.In this connection,the interpreter's subjectivity could perhaps shed some light.As can be easily understood,subjectivity focuses on “subjective”.In other words,the interpreter takes active actions both during preparation and in the interpreting process to help himself do a good job and also to help achieve communication goals.On that note,this report centers on what active actions the author took during his preparation and in the interpreting process.As for preparation,the author touches on how he prepared for this task and why he made these preparations.While the author doesn't elaborate on the interpreter's subjectivity in relation to his preparation,this concept already played a guiding role in his preparatory work.For one thing,instead of being aimless,his preparation was relevant,indicating that it was a subjective process.For another,his preparation was based on his own anticipation of potential challenges and difficulties as well as his active collection of information.Therefore,in this process,subjectivity was already highly relevant.When it comes to interpreting strategies,the author focuses on why he employed these strategies,such as addition,omission and reorganization.In this connection,subjectivity becomes a focal point.In particular,the author's subjectivity in facilitating communication and helping achieve communication goals held the key to his use of the abovementioned strategies.The author concludes that by employing these strategies with the guidance of subjectivity,communication was facilitated and communication goals were achieved to a large extent.By discussing how subjectivity played a crucial role in this interpreting task,the author aims to demonstrate the important guiding role that the interpreter's subjectivity can have.By showing the various kinds of preparation he made and the different strategies he employed,the author intends to showcase that in a tourist event,subjectivity is not only relevant,but also significant.This can perhaps remind interpreters that when they participate in tourist activities,they can give full play to their subjectivity to make a success of the interpreting task.
