With China’s increasingly frequent and extensive intercourse with the rest of the world, government press conference interpretation is playing a significant role in foreign publicity and communication. Therefore, we ought to make a more comprehensive and in-depth study on this issue so as to guide interpretation practice.In order to make the government press conference get success and achieve the good effect on foreign journalists, which is similar to the relevance theory. Relevance theory was put forward by Sperber and Wilson in1986.So the theory can serve as a theoretical guide beneficial for studies on C-E government press conference interpretation.The thesis aims at investigating the interpreters’ performances in C-E interpretation at state-level government press conference, taking relevance theory as a guiding theory and to find out the guiding principles and to identity the corresponding interpreting strategies.The following conclusions are drawn from the study in this dissertation:Applying relevance theory to government press conference interpretation, firstly, interpreter need reconcile different cognitive environment. Secondly, interpreter need retain the contextual effect of the source language.Thirdly, interpreter need ensure the processing effort rewarding.If the processing effort is too great in comparison with the contextual effect; it will break down the relevance of sentence and make it too hard to be processed in listeners’ mind. And it is that during the interpreting process of official press conferences, interpreters often employ five strategies, namely, information supplement, logical processing, integrating the main points, semantic explanation, and restructuring sentences.
