A Study Of Interpreting Culture-loaded Expressions For Press Conferences-From The Perspective Of Relevance Theory

Culture-loaded expressions exhibit a nation's culture,including history,politics,literature,morality,law and custom.With distinct characteristics,culture-loaded words symbolize a unique cultural attraction.The interpretation of culture-loaded words involves a process of transferring cultural connotations smoothly.The development of language can not be separated from the continuous enrichment of cultural connotations,and cultural communication can not be separated from the extensive use of language.Therefore,interpretation is not only about transforming languages,but also connecting cultures.However,each society has its unique history,culture,social backgrounds,customs and habits,which brings great challenges to the interpretation of culture loaded words.Foreign affairs press conferences are high-end and quick in tempo,and it requires the interpretation of culture-loaded words to be not only faithful and concise,but also highlight cultural connotations as much as possible.Based on relevance theory,this article studies the interpretation strategies of culture-loaded words at press conferences,and selects the foreign ministers' press conferences of the National People's Congress from 2017 to 2019 as research objects.This paper categorizes culture-loaded words into four groups:(1)political words and phrases with Chinese characteristics,(2)poems and idioms,(3)metaphors,(4)colloquial words and buzzwords,analyzes the interpretation techniques through case studies,and concludes four strategies:substitution,omission,literal translation,and free translation.The limitation of this paper is stated from two respects:corpus size and native speakers' feedback.It is hoped that it can be used as a reference in the interpretation of Chinese culture-loaded words for diplomatic press conferences and other high-level international fora.
